What If….

The day that changed my life was your typical April night in Southern California. Not too hot like the dog days of summer and not too cold where you needed layers of clothing. I was completely tired and exhausted from walking all day at Disneyland with my family. By the time we got finished there, you could hear the rumbling of our stomachs so we stopped at Chick-fil-A. Out of the blue, I see a Instagram notification from some one that look very familiar.

In 2019, I was taking a GWS class in the spring semester. Their were many women in the class so at times I felt I was outnumbered. One girl that caught my eye was some girl that always wore this grey jacket and printed dark pants that I really liked. I didn’t know her name but wanted to. Months went on but I never had the guts to introduce myself.

Fast forward to April and I get that notification from that same girl I liked. Her name is Stefanie and she requested to follow me. So of course I accepted and followed her back. My heart skipped a beat while I ate because I finally had the guts to say hi (even though it was over Instgram).

“Don’t we have a class together,” I said nervously waiting for her to respond.

We messaged each other all night and went out once or twice. I went out went other girls before her, but something about Stefanie was different. I was so comfortable with her and felt like she was perfect.

In a bold move, maybe the boldest move I have done, I asked her on Easter Sunday if she wanted to be my girlfriend.

She said, “Ask me again.” I repeated myself and she said yes.

Stefanie and I at Starbucks at The Plant on Van Nuys Blvd. on April 26, 2019, after we got done with playing mini golf at Castle Park.

The next date we had, we went to Castle Park in Sherman Oaks. We played mini golf all night. We laughed all night. It was a perfect night. After I beat her at mini golf (though she disputes this claim), we decided to head to Starbucks. This is were I was introduced with Stefanie’s favorite drink: strawberry açaí with lemonade. The picture in this story is still my favorite picture of us. As we drank our drinks, I knew that Stefanie was the absolute best.

April 21, 2021 will be our two-year anniversary. We had many adventures and laughs along the way. We also had many fights and arguments but we try to resolve them together. This is the person I want to be with forever. Yet, all this could have been fantasy. What if she said no to being my girlfriend, what if she never found my instagram account, what if she never took the class I was in, what if she never went to CSUN. What if, what if, what if. In our lives, we encounter what ifs. But if we live with the mindset of what if, we never enjoy the things we have right in front of us. What is right in front of me is the best thing that has happen to me in my life, a person that understands me, makes me comfortable with being myself and loves me.
